Accessibility

Built to work for everyone, and a way to tell us when it does not.

What we aim for

We build this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, WCAG 2.2, at level AA, which is the standard New Zealand government websites work to. Parents use this site on phones, at night, sometimes one-handed with a baby in the other arm, and it has to work in those conditions as well as on a desk.

What that means in practice

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus ring on every link, button and form field, and a skip link to the main content.
  • Every page reads correctly with a screen reader: one heading per page, headings in order, landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer, and a "you are here" marker in the menu.
  • Every photograph carries a description of what is in it. Decorative marks are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Text and background colours meet the AA contrast ratio on every combination used, and we do not use transparency to make text quieter, because it fails that test.
  • Text scales with your browser’s zoom, and the layout reflows down to a 320-pixel-wide screen with no sideways scrolling.
  • Animation is quiet, and switched off when your device asks for reduced motion. The homepage video is silent, decorative, and never plays on a phone.
  • Every page is complete with JavaScript disabled, including the Book a tour form.
  • Macrons render in Māori words, because the site ships the fonts that carry them.

What we know falls short

  • The Education Review Office report on the Northcross & Browns Bay page is a PDF published by ERO. We link it as they published it. If you would rather have its findings read out or summarised, ring us.
  • The seasonal menu and the one-page curriculum summary are PDFs the centre designed for print. Their text is on the pages that link them, in the menu's case in outline, and we will read the current menu to you over the phone.
  • The enrolment enquiry form runs in Infocare, a system we use but did not build. If it does not work for you, ring us and we will help you complete it.

Tell us

If something on this site does not work for you, or you would like any of it in another form, email [email protected] or ring 09 479 1240. Say which page and what happened, and we will fix it or find another way to get you what you needed.
