Magic Garden Takapuna

A spacious early learning environment in the heart of Takapuna

About Magic Garden Takapuna

On Anzac Street in the heart of Takapuna, our centre combines a convenient location with the generous spaces, warm environments and relationship-led approach that families expect from Magic Garden.

We are next door to Takapuna Primary School and across the road from Shore City, which suits local families and parents who work in or travel through Takapuna.

The centre has three dedicated learning environments: Infants, Toddlers and Preschool. That lets our spaces, routines and teaching approaches change with children as they grow.

Its generously proportioned indoor spaces define the centre, and its refurbishment reflects what Magic Garden is known for: welcoming, modern and child-friendly environments that feel like a home away from home.

Soft furnishings, natural materials and areas designed with care give children places to gather, play and collaborate, and quieter spaces where they can slow down, concentrate or spend time with a teacher. We design the environments to be interactive, engaging and interesting, and to invite children to explore, investigate, create and follow their curiosity.

Being beside Takapuna Primary School also gives our Preschool children an important connection. We value our relationship with the school, and the chances it gives our teachers to work with primary school teachers and understand what helps children make a confident, positive move to school.

As at every Magic Garden centre, relationships sit at the heart of what we do. We want children to feel that Magic Garden is a place where they are known, where they belong and where their ideas are valued, and we want parents to feel connected to the people sharing such an important part of their child's early years.

Our rooms at Magic Garden Takapuna

Anzac Street, Takapuna is organised into three dedicated learning environments, Infants, Toddlers and Preschool, so the spaces, routines and teaching can evolve with children as they grow.

The babies’ room at Anzac Street, Takapuna: a green caterpillar of activity boards along the wall, a low mirror with toys hanging in front of it, and a patchwork rug on the wooden floor.

Respectful, unhurried care for the youngest children.

The babies' room at Anzac Street, Takapuna, wide: a large teddy, soft-play shapes, small tables and a play kitchen.

Infants

The atmosphere is all important in our infant rooms. The colour, the sound and the furnishings all create a feeling of tenderness for our youngest children. Relationships matter, building trust and a sense of belonging along with excellent communication.

Teachers spend calm and focused time with each child during individual care routines to build strong bonds. Uninterrupted play with a wide variety of open-ended natural materials and household objects allows children to initiate their own learning, experiment and problem solve while teachers guide and support them.

Teachers watch for how each child's development unfolds in their own unique way. Children are supported to solve their own conflicts, to develop language to express their feelings and make sense of the world around them.

The toddlers’ room at Anzac Street, Takapuna: a sequin canopy hung over the way in, small tables and chairs, white cube shelving and low wooden shelves of materials.

A room built to hold attention, and long stretches in which to give it.

Toddlers

Children, teachers and parents deserve to live in aesthetically pleasing, interesting, and comfortable surroundings. Valuing beauty and respect for people, places and things determines the ‘ways of being’ we role model and foster with children, parents and whānau.

We know children already have plans in mind when they arrive in the centre. So, we use our collective wisdom to design the curriculum and offer resources we know will be attractive and hold the attention of this age group of children. Children's engagement is cherished, so we give them long periods of time in which to choose where to place their attention.

The environment delivers a delicate balance between the edginess and intrigue of new experiences and the stability of familiar favourites. This creates an atmosphere of reassurance, allowing children to get to know a myriad of interesting materials, and then rise to the challenge of using them in increasingly complex ways to communicate ideas, tell stories, imagine and create.

Preschool

We believe children make sense of current life experiences through their explorations and play. Meaningful, authentic learning experiences are designed and implemented responding to what interests children, current events and seasonal influences. Teachers are keen to make sense of children's play and plan how these explorations could go to a deeper level.

Our environment is carefully organised and embedded with literacy, numeracy, arts and active movement. Teachers encourage children to reflect and revisit their thinking. Carlina Rinaldi, President of Reggio Children from 2007 to 2016, said:

We do not hurry to give them (children) the answers, instead we invite them to think about where the answers might be. The challenge is to listen. It is not the answers that are important. It is the process by which you and the child search together.
